Mock Draft: Draftmaster 67

Once again I was able to participate in a Mock Draft over at MFL with a bunch of other fantasy football experts.  The league was part of Jim Day's (@FantasyTaz) extensive list of Mock Drafts that have been going since right after the Super Bowl ended.  His goal is to do about 200 of these drafts before the season starts and use the ADP results to help gauge players values.

For the full draft results you can take a peek over at the MFL site.  It is a draft 16 player and start 10 each week league, with standard PPR scoring.  I got the 1.04 draft spot and took Ryan Matthews to start things out - take a look at the rest of my roster below.

Newton, Cam CAR QB-63.04
Vick, Michael PHI QB-75.04
Lynch, Marshawn SEA RB-112.09
Mathews, Ryan SDC RB-71.04
Turbin, Robert SEA RB (R) -1115.04
Vereen, Shane NEP RB-912.09
Blackmon, Justin JAC WR (R) -68.09
Brown, Vincent SDC WR-713.04
Little, Greg CLE WR-107.04
Maclin, Jeremy PHI WR-74.09
Smith, Torrey BAL WR-86.09
Celek, Brent PHI TE (P)-711.04
Cook, Jared TEN TE-1110.09
Gresham, Jermaine CIN TE-89.04
Gould, Robbie CHI PK-616.09
Eagles, Philadelphia PHI Def-714.09

I know logic tells you to wait on QB as the position is so deep but I couldn't help myself in drafting 2 QB's in the first 5 rounds.  I feel in Fantasy football you need every advantage you can get, and at QB taking guys that can run the ball and give you extra points on the ground each week and the potential for an extra 6 points with a rushing TD it was worth the picks of taking Newton at 3.04 and then Vick falling to 5.04 was just too good to pass up on.

I felt I got great value at the time in grabbing Matthews in round one and then coming back with Lynch in round 2.  I took Lynch just a couple of days before the news broke about his latest trouble with the law and his DUI.  Probably would have dropped him down a round after hearing that news but still can't complain with the Matthews/Lynch combo at RB.  I did end up handcuffing Lynch with Turbin in round 15 just to be safe in case of a Lynch suspension.  Vereen was my 4th RB and I grabbed him with the 12.09 pick.  I think at that position in the draft he is a tremendous flier and well worth a roster spot.

My WR ranks are a little thin and don't have any big names but at the same time I have a set of 5 WR's that are on the verge of breaking out and all have a shot at being the #1 WR for their teams.  Grabbed Jeremy Maclin at 4.09, Torrey Smith at 6.09, Greg Little at 7.04, Justin Blackmon at 8.09, and Vincent Brown at 13.04.  I think Maclin has the ability to be a true #1 WR in Fantasy football and Smith is a legit WR2 with great upside.  Little as a WR3 is great with so much upside.  Then both Blackmon and Vincent Brown have chances to produce big as WR4 or WR5 if needed.

I ended up going with 3 TE's in total with Gresham at 9.04, Jared Cook at 10.09 and Brent Celek at 11.04.  What this tells me is if you wait on TE's in drafts you will have plenty to choose from.  I really should have only drafted 2 TE's total but thought the value was too good to pass up.  It is a start 1 TE league but also the Flex position offers a spot to insert a TE.

Grabbed Robbie Gould in the last round.  You need to draft a kicker and always wait until the last round and try to take someone that has a proven track record that plays in a decent offense.

Grabbed the Eagles team defense at 14.09 and was thrilled about it.  I even thought about taking them in round 13 as well.  I always kind of think team defenses get drafted later then what they should, if you can get one of the top 5 defenses a round before anyone else is even thinking about drafting a defense why not?
